Reading Rescue is an early literacy intervention used in public schools across New York City. Elementary schools in need of support partner with Literacy Trust or Teachers College to bring in Reading Rescue. The partner organization supports staff members in using research-based strategies to accelerate reading and writing growth for a school’s most struggling students.
Reading Rescue professional development for partner schools consists of ten full-day workshops. Each workshop is led by a Literacy Trust staff member/ Reading Rescue expert who guides participants through discussions and activities. All participants are expected to take the best practices learned in Reading Rescue workshops back to their schools and implement said practices in daily one-on-one instruction with eligible students.
incorporating all FIVe pillars of literacy
Reading Rescue professional development incorporates all five pillars of literacy--phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
a strengths-based approach to teaching
Reading Rescue instruction is entirely data-driven, based solely on what individual students need to practice as determined through individualized assessments at the start of the program.
a multi-sensory approach to phonics
Reading Rescue promotes teaching phonics through a multi-sensory approach that uses multiple modalities, including visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactical.
incorporating both reading and writing daily
Reading Rescue covers both reading and writing to ensure a holistic approach to literacy development that acknowledges the reciprocal development of both skills simultaneously.
There are many ways to support Reading Rescue. We hope you join our movement to ensure that all New York City children are reading on grade level. Whether you are an elementary school staff member, faculty, administrator, non-profit employee, or general lover of reading, there is a way for you to get involved.
